Richard Evelyn Byrd, aka Admiral Byrd was an adventurer who ultimately, died in his sleep. It’s ironic, as there are so many who wish for that. Yet these are folks who live sedate lives with little adventure at all. Ironically, it seems they are the ones who find adventurous deaths instead. But always ripe for adventure, he found a peaceful demise in the end. To give a little perspective, it’s important to understand Admiral Byrd. This adventurer was a pilot who took several risky and notorious flights. For example, this explorer successfully took a flight to the North Pole. This was at a time when very few people flew, back in 1926. This was so impressive to so many people that he won the Medal of Honor. This high distinction was awarded to very few for risking their life. Although flying is common today, in 1920 it was something a bit more extraordinary. Taking an adventure all the way to the North Pole was unheard of. Admiral Byrd also attempted one of the first Transatlantic flights but his plane crashed. He was on the way to France and the flight crashed on take-off. Although he wasn’t seriously injured, the flight was not completed as his co-pilot was. Since someone beat them to it as the co-pilot recovered, Admiral Byrd missed out on credit for achieving this. Still, he continued to be on the look-out for the next big adventure. Although these acts are common now, it’s important to remember flying was new back then. Anyone willing to attempt such brave actions was recognized for it. To a young kid in that time, Admiral Byrd was a role model for bravery. Watching his adventures inspired many to want to learn how to fly airplanes. This was important as his adventures motivated an entire generation of future pilots. One could argue that without him, there might be a shortage of pilots.
Admiral Byrd deserves to be admired for the risks that he took back in the 1920′s. Planes were new and commercial airliners the wave of the future. Attempting a transatlantic flight was the equivalent of setting out to find the new world. Total failure could have been catastrophic but this man was willing to take the risk.
Without risk takers in our society, it would be hard to advance further than the typical. Thanks to people like him, the interest in discovery prevails.
